SECURE’s long-time commitment to Movember hit two incredible milestones this year—more than $1M raised since 2020 and the third year in a row that SECURE takes home Movember’s Oil Rig Rumble championship.
Since 2020, SECURE has united to support Movember, a global movement aimed at raising awareness and funds for key issues related to men’s health, including mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. The annual Oil Rig Rumble challenge, now in its third year, is central to Movember in Canada. This fundraising initiative is a friendly competition amongst energy companies and SECURE is proud to now be the three-peat champion.
“At Movember, we believe that everyone can play a role and SECURE has been an incredible leader, inspiring action across the industry,” says Evan Connor, Movember Canada Oil Rig Rumble lead coordinator. “We might not all be able to grow a moustache – but we all have men in our lives that are worth fighting for. By taking part in the Oil Rig Rumble, energy sector workers can contribute to important changes in the face of men’s health.”
The 2024 campaign brought more than just a friendly competition amongst peers in the energy sector. Employees get to honour the important men in their lives and participate in multiple learning opportunities and events that spark vital conversations around mental health and early cancer detection.
Key highlights from the month included:
The entire campaign was topped off with the opportunity to compete amongst the other top Oil Rig Rumble companies with an on-ice experience at the Rogers Place, home of the Oilers. The game—with SECURE competing alongside Pembina against Imperial Oil and MEG Energy—was a nail-biter and even went into overtime. While we ended up losing 8-7, we know the real prize was the opportunity to strengthen culture and rally passionate employees across multiple business units.
This year’s campaign was filled with major achievements. Through employee raised funds, internal employee events and a dollar-for-dollar company match, SECURE raised over $318,000. We also had 27 employees who raised at least $1,000. Leading the individual fundraising charge was Vice Chair of the Board of Directors, Rene Amirault, raising an impressive $45,000. Rene finished as the 7th highest individual fundraiser in Canada and 18th in the world.
When 13-year Mo Bro, Movember champion and Vice President of Waste Management at SECURE, Greg Filipchuk started the first Mo Farmers of SECURE team, he couldn’t have imagined where his team would net out in 2024. This year, the Mo Farmers of SECURE finished as the second highest fundraising team in Canada and third in the world!
“Over the years, Movember has evolved into much more than a moustache or simply 30 days in November. We all have personal reasons why we participate. I started participating in Movember after the loss of my uncle,” says Greg Filipchuk, Vice President of Waste Management at SECURE. “Today, I am incredible proud of how far we’ve come and how SECURE continues reinforce the importance of men’s health, in particular mental wellness.”
The success of this year was truly a team effort. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who gave their time and resources to this year’s campaign. We are excited to continue the Mo-mentum in 2025, uniting once again to advance men’s health.
